Anyways- I've been wanting a gold metal and glass coffee table for our living room for a while now but haven't found "the one". I love the Clairemont from Crate and Barrel but it's too large for the small space.

Then I found the Vittsjo coffee table from Ikea which is a perfect size for the space- 30" diameter. So this weekend I got out the gold spray paint (actually, I don't think I ever put it away...) It was super easy and for only $49.99 plus the cost of a can of spray paint it was a cheap fix!
Not too many pieces which is always a good sign- with Olive photobombing as usual.
I put together the table and then took it out to my spray paint lab garage.
I used Rust-oleum Pure Gold spray paint and primer in one. I really liked the way it covered and the spray nozzle is so much easier to grip than the old school cans with the nozzle on top. (again with the photobomb!)
I did 3 coats, waiting an hour or two between each one and then let it dry completely overnight.
I didn't use the bottom laminate base and instead just placed the glass back on top.
I am so happy with my new coffee table! I'm thinking about using the mirror spray paint to spray the glass but I've never used it so I'm a little nervous.
Has anyone used it before and what did you think?

DeleteBeautiful! If you wanted to I'm sure you could find or order a mirror that could be placed on top of the laminate botton shelf so it looks more like the Crate & Barrel version.

DeleteThe Ikea hack looks AMAZING! The crossed metal base looks a million times better than the laminate shelf at the bottom. I found your blog b/c I was thinking about purchasing the (expensive) Crate and Barrel coffee table but now I may reconsider.
ReplyDeleteYou asked about the mirror spray paint - I've used it numerous times. It's a miracle. It turns glass into a mirror. ALSO, the cool thing about the Krylon Looking Glass spray paint is that you can use it to make the glass top into mercury glass, which gives it more of an antique finish. With the mercury glass finish you can also incorporate gold flecks into the surface, which would pull in nicely with the gold, metal coffee table. Just a suggestion! If you google DIY mercury glass you can find numerous tutorials, or I can e-mail you my instructions if you want.
I came across your blog (which I love!) when I was trying to find a alternative for the Clairemont since it was to large and expensive. We have thus far put the coffee table together and are just waiting for the temperature to warm up a bit so we can effectively spray paint it. Friday is going to be about 50 degrees so I think that is our best bet. I was wondering if you used the rubberized pads that come with the table that go under the glass? I think we are going to also get the shelves and go exactly what you did! Very creative!!

I have been looking at this coffee table for a while from Ikea and thought about painting it, but the bottom shelf was bugging me. I literally googled "Spray painting a coffee table gold" and your blog popped up with the exact table I've been considering painting! Not sure why I hadn't realized you could just remove the bottom shelf all together. Sold! Ikea owes you a commission. :) Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI did this to the long coffee table from Ikea about 6 months ago. But the paint started to scratch off and smudge from day one. How is yours holding up? Any suggestions on how to prevent that from happening?

DeleteI have this coffee table in it's black form and also bought it for its size - but I really hate that it's black. Thank you so much for posting this - I'm going to spray paint it antique brass in the spring and I think I will finally like the table! I also never thought about taking out the bottom shelf!
ReplyDeleteI don't know how expensive glass is, but you could take the bottom shelf to a glass company and have a shelf cut to size. Then do the mercury glass treatment to both. I think just two glass shelves would be lovely tho.

ReplyDeleteI sprayed painted a similar table from Target, however, the paint simply peels off with a simple glide of my nail (can't imagine people sliding something off of it)
I lightly sanded and even primed my coffee table (twice) prior to spraying it gold, but still same problem. :(
