Fashion Friday : Blush & Red

Happy Friday everyone!  Lately I have been obsessing over wearing blush and red together.  It sounds like an unlikely pairing but the more I see it the more I love it!

I was curious to see if this color combination could translate into home design so I did some serious internet searching and here's what I found.

It really was a struggle to find many photos with this color combination in home design- what do you guys think?  Would you try this color combo in your home or is this one best left to fashion?

Outdoor Update

It feels like so long ago I posted about my outdoor design and I wanted to give you guys an update.

Before we could do anything with the furntiure my husband stained the deck.  Here's a little before and after- didn't he do a great job?!

The "floor" of the deck is actually a composite material so that didn't need to be stained- just the surrounding railings.  We chose a darker stain than what was originally done and I really love the results.
After spending some quality time in the basement with an allen wrench the Ikea Arholma lounge furniture is assembled and in place!

The quality of the Arholma is great and the assembly was fairly simple, but most importantly it is super comfy!  I still need the decorative pillows and some other accessories but it's getting there!

Fashion Friday : Late Afternoon

This week's Fashion Friday has been inspired by Liz of Late Afternoon.  She always has great style so it was a tough choice but I really loved this outfit called Lemon Lime.

I decided to pull together all my favorite Lemon Lime inspired home decor- all guaranteed to bring some "zest" to your home!

Closet Clean Out

This past weekend I did a major spring cleaning of my wardrobe- closet and dresser.  It was a major undertaking but I am so happy with the results.  I love clearing out the boots and jackets to make room for sundresses, sandals and tanks!  If you're like me, I completely forgot what spring and summer clothes I had from last year so it's always good to do this before I start shopping for summer.

Closet Before
I have a small walk in closet but I was not maximizing the space at all.  I had clutter on the floor and my pile of sweatshirts on the top shelf was out of control.
I always keep the door to my closet open because of the shoe rack hanging on the back of the door.   While I liked having all of my necklaces organized and hanging it bugged me how messy it looked when I would walk by.

So after some serious sorting and three trash bags of clothes later...

My cleaned out closet!

After cleaning out some drawers I made room for the sweatshirts in a dresser.  I also used another matching storage bin from our coat closet to maximize the closed storage for clutches, scarves and purses which made it look messy before.

I switched all of my clothing to white hangers which makes it look so much neater.

Stop me if I ever try to buy more colored denim!

And my necklaces got moved to an inside wall of the closet not visible from the door- but are all still organized and easily accessible!

6 Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Closet

1.  If You Didn't Wear it Last Year - Toss It!
I found a lot of clothes I bought a few years ago and didn't wear last year a single time.  I got rid of anything I didn't wear from last year- show no mercy!  But instead of really "tossing it"...

2.  Donate, donate, donate!
I never throw away my clothes (except for old bathing suits, socks or undies- yuck!)  When you are sorting through your wardrobe separate out clothes that you may want to sell with consignment/eBay and the rest bag up to donate.  Help someone in need by donating your clothes to the Salvation Army or a similar clothing drop in your hometown.

3.  Everything Out
I don't always do this but after this spring clean out I will always do this!  Take everything out of your closet. It is a lot quicker to just sort through things while keeping them all on the hanger but if you take everything out of the closet you may find a few things you had shoved to the back or fell off hangers.  It also gives you the opportunity to put things back in a new order.  I put my clothing back with the winter pieces towards the corner and pulled the short sleeve and sleeveless tops to the front.

4.  Color Coordinate
After going through all of my clothes I started to put them back in type order (ie. long sleeves, button down shirts, cardigans, etc.) as well as grouping them by color.  It makes it so much easier to find the things you want to wear.  After doing this I realized I own plenty of red tops and mint sleeveless shirts- not something I would have noticed when they were out of order.

5.  Clean and Store Away Your Winter Pieces
Now is the time to get any coats repaired, sweaters dry cleaned or boots resoled.  You'll be glad you did when you are ready to wear them again in the fall.

Also, this week check me out over at Design Your Dwelling where I've entered my Home Office Design and be sure to "Like" it, in the weekly Moodboard Link Up!  Lots of great designs goin' on over there!

Fashion Friday : The Lookbook

This weeks Fashion Friday is inspired by the super sweet Corinne Davis of The Lookbook.   I love reading Corinne's blog- she always has the prettiest things!   I chose her outfit Coral & Floral because of its fun pattern and color- doesn't it make you feel spring-y?!

I wanted to capture the feminine flirty style of her outfit in the space I designed.  I love how she made floral so un-grandma!

Home Office E-Design

I'm really excited to share an e-design I did for a new client. She e-mailed me asking for help with her home office. She needed a place that she could work from home when she needed to as well as her husband (ie. no girly stuff!) and she needed a lot of storage for pretty and non-pretty items! Her home is actually local to me so I popped over for a visit to check out the space.

At 10' x 8'6" it's a nice size room and has just one window.  Who doesn't have a room like this in their home?  We wanted to get the room looking light and bright but not boring. Here's the final design board!

The wall paint Benjamin Moore: Nimbus 1465 is a soft grey that will lighten up the room.
For the furniture I stayed light as well. The desk is a glass top and has a chrome X base. The chair is a medium grey leather with silver nailhead accents that compliment the desk base.

I chose the oh-so-loved Ikea Expedit bookcase in white for her storage. I love how you can pick and choose how much you want to use as display and how much you want to use as pure storage. And if over time she needs more storage she can add baskets.

She expressed the need for additional seating as well, something with high sides if she wanted to keep an eye on her son so we chose a modern shaped, small scale club chair.

Now for some color!  First I started with the blue and white fretwork drapes. By framing out the window with drapes and mounting the drapes close to the ceiling it will add height to the room and the window will appear larger. I found the very cool yellow, grey and blue ikat accent pillow on etsy and a yellow desk lamp to compliment it!  All of the prints in the space- fretwork, chevron and ikat give the room an updated, modern style!

I can't wait to see the finished room and will be sure to share the "after" pics with all of you!

Wall Stencils for the Modern Home

Today is all about wall stencils (please don't click away)  I know exactly what you're thinking- but I promise there is no ivy, hearts or flowers involved.  I can still remember the ivy my mom painstakingly stenciled in one of the bedrooms of our house growing up.  Modern day stenciling is all about doing an overall pattern that mimics a look of wallpaper without all the mess and the price.  I stumbled upon these great stencils by Cutting Edge Stencils on etsy and now I'm hooked.

I'm so crazy for this, especially in metallic paint.  Doesn't it look like a super ritzy wallpaper?

You could even stencil on a simple jute area rug!

Chevron Allover Stencil - Small scale - reusable stencil patterns for walls just like wallpaper - DIY decor

After racking my brain trying to come up with a place in my house I could use this I decided on my closet!  I love patterns in unlikely places and there's a little less pressure for it to be "perfect" when trying it out in a closet.  And it gives me motivation to actually clean and purge things in my closet!

I just placed my order for the Herringbone pattern!

Hopefully after this weekend I'll have an update for you all!
